Quang Binh Charity Trip

alt In the spirit of the Vietnamese saying “Strong leaves protect tattered ones", Asiana Travel Mate launched the “Hearts for Central Vietnam” program and recently donated relief supplies to flood victims in Quang Binh Province.”

In the early morning, management and employees of Asiana Travel Mate hit the road to visit Thuong Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district, Quang Binh Province, the poorest and the heaviest area impacted by the storms and floods of October 2010. The flood destroyed over a hundred homes, tons of food, crops, livestock in the thousands and polluted water sources.

The company’s team arrived at the commune about 10 on a rainy morning and met with the Vietnamese Fatherland Front Committee. Mr. Son, chairman of the committee and members of the commune authority helped distribute rice, cooking oil and clothes to families who gathered at the office compound.

We were all tired and hungry after the 6 hour car journey from Hue, but went to visit several households to distribute additional supplies. The conditions of the homes gave us some insights into the lives and poverty of the people in this remote area. We were touched by the warm smiles when they received our gifts.

Leaving the village which is surrounded by misty limestone peaks, we were glad that we were able to bring some joy to these poor ones.

Hoi An ancient town

Hoi An is an ancient riverside trading town in Central Vietnam. In the 16th century, Hoi An was one of Vietnam's busiest trading centers. Chinese merchants settled here to do business with European and Asian traders… until the Thu Bon river silted up, and trade shifted further downstream.

Today the descendants of those Chinese merchants maintain Hoi An's narrow streets and distinctive row houses. The streets are now filled with lamp shops, tailors, and travel agencies, selling new products but preserving the enterprising spirit of old.
